Analog Dreams: Celebrating Record Store Day in Kansas City

There is something about the "KC Sound" that just feels better on vinyl. Maybe it’s our city's deep jazz roots or the DIY spirit of our local indie scene, but Kansas City remains a stronghold for physical media.

With Record Store Day 2026 officially landing on Saturday, April 18th, it’s time to step out of the studio, grab a coffee from a local spot on Truman Rd, and go crate-digging. Here is your guide to the best shops in the city and how to make the most of the holiday.

The KC Vinyl Crawl: Where to Go

  • Mills Record Company (Westport): The gold standard. If you’re looking for the major RSD exclusives or want to browse one of the best "Local Music" sections in the Midwest, this is your first stop.

  • Sister Anne’s Records and Coffee (Cherry St): Records and caffeine—the two food groups of any Soundstructure resident. It’s the perfect place to hang out and talk gear with fellow musicians.

  • Revolution Records (Crossroads): Great vibes and an incredible selection of used gems. If you need inspiration for your next production, spend an hour in their psych-rock or jazz bins.

  • 7th Heaven (Troost Ave): A KC institution. They’ve been supporting the local hip-hop and rock scenes for decades.

From Rehearsal to Retail: Getting Your Music on the Shelves

As a musician at Soundstructure, Record Store Day shouldn't just be about buying music—it should be about the goal of selling yours. Most of our local shops are incredibly supportive of KC talent.

How to get "Record Store Ready":

  1. Finish the Mix: Use your 24/7 studio access this month to finalize those tracks.

  2. Go Physical: Whether it’s a limited run of vinyl or even high-quality cassettes (yes, they are still a thing!), having a physical product is the only way to get on these shelves.

  3. The Consignment Pitch: Once your record is pressed, reach out to these local shops about "Consignment." Most KC owners love stocking local artists who rehearse right here in the city.

Don’t Miss: Stereophonic at the Kauffman Center

If you need a break from the studio but still want to keep your head in the game, Stereophonic is running at the Kauffman Center from April 7–12. It’s a play about a rock band in 1976 recording a new album, and it captures the "agony and ecstasy" of the studio process perfectly. It’s a must-watch for any producer or songwriter.
