Staying Cool: The Mid-Summer Rehearsal Etiquette Guide

It’s July in KC. The humidity is sitting at a steady "uncomfortable," and Truman Road feels like a frying pan. While the rest of the city is melting, we’re keeping it a crisp 70 degrees inside Soundstructure.

When the heat index climbs, the studio becomes more than just a place to practice—it becomes the community hub. To make sure everyone stays inspired (and chilled out), here is our mid-summer guide to studio etiquette and staying sharp.

1. The "Air-Lock" Rule

We’ve invested in high-end HVAC to keep your vintage gear safe and your band comfortable. Every time a hallway door is propped open for a long load-in, the KC humidity wins.

  • Etiquette Tip: Be quick with the doors! If you’re moving a heavy 4x12 cab, grab a bandmate to hold the door rather than propping it. Keeping that cold air in helps everyone’s tuning stability and keeps the electric bill from skyrocketing.

2. Hydrate or Die-drate

It sounds like a cliché until you’re dizzy mid-solo. July is the month of the "Studio Gallon."

  • Pro-Tip: Skip the ice-cold water right before a vocal session—it can actually constrict your vocal cords. Room temperature water with an electrolyte tablet is the gold standard.

  • Etiquette Tip: Clean up your "water graveyard." Empty plastic bottles left in the corners are the #1 cause of studio clutter. Use the recycling bins in the lounge!

3. Respect the "Sonic Space"

When it’s hot outside, everyone wants to be inside. This means all 18 of our studios are likely humming at once.

  • Etiquette Tip: Check your "bleed." While our rooms are professionally isolated, July is a great time to experiment with lower stage volume. Your ears (and your neighbors) will thank you. If you’re a music teacher, consider using this month to focus on acoustic arrangements or theory to give the eardrums a break.

4. July Inspiration: The Big Ass Stadium Tour

If you need a reason to keep grinding through the heat, look no further than Kauffman Stadium on July 15thPost Malone is bringing his "Big Ass Stadium Tour" to the K.

  • The Lesson: stadium shows are a masterclass in endurance. Watch how they manage energy over a two-hour set in the July heat. Use your cool rehearsal time to build that same kind of stamina for your own summer gigs at spots like Grinders or The Truman.

5. Celebrate the "Lawn Party"

On July 19th, take a breather and head to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for Kansas City’s annual Lawn Party. It’s a great way to see local KC talent in a relaxed setting. It’s the perfect "low-energy" networking event to meet other producers and artists without breaking a sweat.
