The countdown to summer is officially on, and in the Denver music scene, that means one thing: The Underground Music Showcase (UMS). With the festival making its highly anticipated move to the RiNo Art District this year, the energy is peaking right in our own backyard.
For many local bands, a UMS slot is the highlight of the year. But here’s the reality of festival play: you don’t get a two-hour headlining slot. You get 40 minutes to win over a crowd, impress talent buyers, and make a lasting impression.
At Soundstructure, we see our 24 studios buzzing in May as bands move into "festival mode." Here is how to use your rehearsal time to ensure those 40 minutes are flawless.
In a 40-minute set, every second counts. If you spend three minutes tuning between songs, you’ve just lost 10% of your performance time.
The Soundstructure Strategy: Use your rehearsal to practice your transitions. Don’t stop between songs. Work on "segues"—musical bridges that lead directly from one track into the next. In our soundproof rooms, you can perfect these seamless handoffs without distraction, ensuring your energy never drops.
Festival stages are notoriously frantic. Changeovers are fast, monitors might be wonky, and the Colorado sun might be right in your eyes.
The Soundstructure Strategy: Don’t rehearse in perfect conditions. Turn off the "main" lights and use a single lamp to mimic a dark club, or face the windows to simulate a bright afternoon set on the RiNo outdoor stages. Practice a "fast setup"—see how quickly you can get your gear ready and line-checked. The more comfortable you are with the "rush," the calmer you’ll be on game day.
UMS is a discovery festival. People will be walking in and out of venues constantly. You have about 30 seconds to catch the eye of someone walking by the stage.
The Soundstructure Strategy: If you aren’t moving, you aren't performing. Use the space in your annual studio to work on your stage presence. Record a video of your rehearsal from a "crowd perspective." Are you all staring at your pedalboards? At Soundstructure, you have the privacy to get weird, try out new stage moves, and build a visual identity that matches your sound.
The UMS community is massive, and many of the bands you’ll see on the posters are rehearsing right here in our warehouse.
The Soundstructure Strategy: May is the perfect time to chat with your neighbors in the hallways. Sharing a wall with another band playing the showcase? Use the common areas to coordinate cross-promotion, share gear tips, or just build that RiNo music community bond before the festival kicks off.
Whether you’re playing a rooftop in RiNo or a hidden stage on Broadway, your UMS success is built in the rehearsal room. Let’s make those 40 minutes legendary.
The Soundstructure Experience:
