Pouring Your Musical Artistic Talent Into Other Creative Ventures

May 21, 2021

It’s a fact that musicians are some of the most creative people around, but making music at your Kansas City band rehearsal space can only take up so much of a musician’s time. There are plenty of other ways to take advantage of your innate creativity outside of the band. Here are a few suggestions.

Video Content Creator

Whether you have a plain old smartphone or a full-on video camera setup, you have more power in your hand than professional filmmakers did only a few decades ago. Just make you have some good lighting, create good angles—and hit the record button. You can create vlogs to post online on your band’s website. Topics could range from details about your music, bands that have had an influence on you, and updates about your next gig. You could even record yourself doing a cover of your favorite song. Upload these clips to YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram and try to get some engagement.

Photographer

If video recording isn’t in your wheelhouse, you could turn to photography. Take pictures of your own band—or even other bands. You could also take pictures of concerts. As a musician, you already have insight into what shots you should focus on, such as a guitarist during a solo or the exhausted drummer after a really intense song.
Podcaster

Podcasting is more popular than ever these days, and there are literally thousands of podcasts available on just about every topic imaginable. Find a topic you are an expert on and get started. Perhaps one of your bandmates would want to co-host with you. You can have guests on any topic, but music might be a good place to start. All you need to get started is a decent quality mic, a program to do the recording, and a quiet spot to set up. You can store your podcast on a variety of platforms, including Spotify and Apple music.

Blogger

Do you fancy yourself a writer? All you need to get a blog started is a keyboard and a simple website. If you don’t want to add a blog to your band’s existing website, you can create your own. WordPress offers an easy-to-use interface and attractive templates so you can easily create a place to share your thoughts online.
Blogging is a great way for writers to share their thoughts with the rest of the world. This works especially well for people who do not like speaking publicly. Wondering what you could write about? You can write about your experiences on tour, difficulties you might be facing in the studio, how your creative process works, or music that inspires you. You could even cover topics completely unrelated to music. The ideas are endless.
